Article: 'Fear Not' — The One Thing Every Major Religion Agrees On by David Henzel

Love Not Fear — the idea that every decision in life comes from one of two places: love or fear. It’s the lens through which I try to make decisions, build companies, and live my life.

But here’s the thing that still stops me in my tracks: this isn’t a modern idea.

Not even close. It’s thousands of years old. And it doesn’t belong to any one tradition — it shows up in virtually every major religion on Earth.

The Numbers Are Staggering

When you actually dig into the sacred texts, the pattern is impossible to ignore:

Christianity — “Fear not” appears over 100 times in the Bible. That’s not a footnote. That’s a theme. And 1 John 4:18 puts it plainly: “Perfect love casts out fear.”

Islam — The root word for “fear” appears 124 times in the Quran. And Quran 10:62 says: “The friends of Allah have no fear, nor shall they grieve.”

Judaism — “Al-tirah” — do not fear — appears 51 times in the Torah and Hebrew Bible. Isaiah 41:10: “Fear not, for I am with you.”

Hinduism — The Bhagavad Gita lists fearlessness as the first divine quality. Not courage, not strength — fearlessness. Chapter 4, verse 10: “Freed from attachment, fear, and anger — many have attained My love.”

Buddhism — Abhaya, or fearlessness, is a core teaching. The Dhammapada says: “Hatred does not cease by hatred. By love alone is hatred healed.”

Taoism — Fear is addressed across five chapters of the Tao Te Ching. Chapter 67 says simply: “From compassion comes courage.”

Sufism — The mystic poet Hafiz wrote: “Fear is the cheapest room in the house. I would like to see you living in better conditions.”

What This Means

Seven traditions. Thousands of years apart. Different languages, different cultures, different continents. And they all landed on the same truth: fear is the obstacle, and love is the way through.

This isn’t a coincidence. It’s a signal.

The Love Not Fear framework — purpose, values, vision, habits — isn’t something new. It’s something ancient, organized into a system that works for modern life.

Every time you choose love over fear, you’re not following a trend. You’re tapping into something that billions of people across millennia have recognized as fundamental to being human.

The Practical Question

What decision are you currently making from fear?

Maybe it’s staying in a role that doesn’t align with who you are. Maybe it’s avoiding a conversation you know you need to have. Maybe it’s playing small because the alternative feels too exposed.

Whatever it is — the sages, prophets, poets, and teachers across every tradition would tell you the same thing:

Fear not.

Not because it’s easy. Because it’s the path.

This is the foundation of the Love Not Fear operating system — a framework for making better decisions by understanding the two forces behind every choice. If this resonates, learn more about the framework or reach out.

Here’s an exercise rooted in this same tradition. The Funeral Exercise asks you to imagine what people would say about you at the end. It cuts through the noise and shows you what actually matters. Try it for free →
